Everyone who manages a team of technicians should take the time to learn what it is that the members of their team actually do and what it takes to get the work done. While spending a day or two following your team members around will not teach a manager everything about the work, it will certainly provide some insight and useful information to the astute manager who truly cares about his or her workforce and making sure maximum productivity and safety levels are maintained.

Aviation technicians, perhaps more than any other maintenance technicians, must stay up to date on the many rapid changes to the planes they work on. From a cost standpoint it may seem to make sense to replace these older workers with younger folks who are already up to date. In reality, this practice will lead to low morale and a lack of loyalty to the company, both of which will reduce the quality and quantity of work being done.
As in any field, proper management of aviation maintenance technicians can directly affect the success or failure of an aviation-based business. Remember that the “us vs them” mentality is very common when managing any technicians.
