Roger Miller spent decades in general and corporate aviation, working on everything from classic Cubs to $80 million Gulfstreams. Today, he teaches at AIM Charlotte—driven by a passion to give back and help the next generation of technicians succeed. In this video, Roger shares how teaching became his unexpected calling, and why AIM’s student-first culture is unlike any other.
My name’s Roger Miller. I’m an instructor here at AIM Charlotte. I’ve been in aviation for about 30 years—25 of those in general and corporate aviation, actually working on airplanes. I’ve worked on everything from fabric-covered single-seat J-3 Cubs to $80 million Gulfstreams.
My father was a private pilot, so I’ve been around airplanes since I was a little kid. I was always interested in the mechanical side—what makes them go, how they fly. Having an A&P certificate in my pocket has opened a lot of doors. I never thought I’d be a teacher, but here I am—and I enjoy it.
I really enjoy the camaraderie and enthusiasm from the students. That’s what drives a lot of us instructors to teach. We focus on the student and their success. When a student earns their A&P and starts working in the field, it makes us all proud. There’s no better feeling than that.
I never thought I’d become an instructor at an A&P school. And here I am. I want to help the younger generation find a great aviation career—just like I did. I want to give back to this industry, and that’s exactly what I’m doing here at AIM Charlotte. I’ve been given a great opportunity with this company to give back to the industry that gave so much to me.
