The aviation maintenance field is not just growing. It is replacing a workforce at a scale the industry has not seen before. 83% of current technicians globally are expected to retire or leave the profession within the next decade, and Boeing projects a need for 710,000 new aviation maintenance technicians worldwide by 2044.
On the supply side, the Aviation Technician Education Council reported that only a little over 9,000 new mechanic certificates were issued in 2024, well short of what is needed to close the gap. One-third of available training seats at FAA-certificated schools went unfilled that same year, which means the pipeline has capacity that simply is not being used.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 5% employment growth for aircraft mechanics and avionics technicians from 2024 to 2034, faster than the average for all occupations, with approximately 13,100 average annual job openings projected over the decade. The majority of those openings stem from retirements rather than net new positions.
Where AMTs Work

How to Start AMT Training
The minimum requirement to work as a certified aviation maintenance technician in the United States is completion of an FAA-approved Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS) or documented hands-on experience that meets FAA eligibility thresholds. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and able to read, write, and speak English.
Most AMTS programs take between 18 and 24 months to complete. The Aviation Maintenance Technician program at Aviation Institute of Maintenance (AIM) is approximately 21 months and prepares students to pursue FAA Airframe and Powerplant certification.
After completing an approved program, graduates may sit for the FAA written, oral, and practical exams to earn their A&P certification. Passing all three exams is required before a technician can work unsupervised and sign off on aircraft maintenance. AIM prepares students to pursue that certification; it does not guarantee exam passage or employment.
