It was always such a big deal—me being a girl. It’s always a big deal. A big deal that I go to school, a big deal that I work as a mechanic.

I’ve always naturally been the kind of person who says, “Let me see if I can figure it out,” instead of asking for help. It just seemed like something cool to learn. I saw myself as capable—and then I became capable. I kept getting hired, I stayed in jobs, and I did all the work I was given.

When I walk into a room, I don’t see myself as a woman—I see myself as a worker, just like everyone else. But when I walk into a room full of men, all they see is a girl.

I wore the same uniform as my male coworkers. I did the same exact job. But to prove that I have value as a mechanic, I have to work ten times harder. To be considered a good worker, I have to go above and beyond—and I have.
