A Few Highlights
Welcome to AIM Indianapolis—the beginning of your aviation career.
From playing music professionally to driving school buses, this AIM graduate’s journey took an inspiring turn when he enrolled at our Indianapolis campus. Watch how his hands-on training and the support of instructors helped him become an aviation maintenance technician at GE Aerospace—and transformed his life along the way.
I started off playing music professionally when I was 13. I thought I’d be the next Stevie Ray Vaughan or Charlie Daniels. But music is a fickle business. I ended up driving our tour motorhome and realized I could drive — so I became a school bus driver for six and a half years.
Eventually I wanted more income and started asking around. A friend’s husband was a FedEx aircraft mechanic and asked if I’d ever considered aviation maintenance. I said, “Honestly, I don’t think I’m smart enough.” He told me I might surprise myself.
Soon after, I heard a radio ad for AIM. I wrote the number down, called, and asked my friend’s husband to tour the campus with me. I didn’t know one aircraft from another, so I asked, “Can I learn what I need to here to be successful?” He said yes—and that was all I needed.
I signed up that day and started my education. I worked on the red plane in the hangar (which used to be yellow), and did lots of projects here. I made lifelong friends, not just classmates but instructors who helped me through tough projects and taught me things I’d never seen before.
This is where I earned my license. I still come back and feel at home. Without aviation, I wouldn’t be where I am now. In 2019, I graduated, got married, got a job at GE, and had my first child.
If it weren’t for AIM and the grace of God, I wouldn’t be sitting here wearing a GE Aerospace T-shirt, proud of where I work. But I still wear my AIM logo too—because that was the first step. Now I can provide for my wife, my two kids, and even our two puppies. I wouldn’t have our home or minivan or success without AIM. And I’ll always be grateful for the Aviation Institute of Maintenance.
