Most aspiring mechanics attend an FAA-approved Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS), where they complete coursework and hands-on training in airframe and powerplant systems. 

Alternatively, you can qualify by gaining a minimum of 18 months of practical experience under the supervision of a certified mechanic, though this path is less common. After completing education or work experience, you must pass written, oral, and practical exams to obtain FAA certification, enabling you to work as an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanic. 

Additionally, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Be able to read, write, speak, and understand English. Once eligible, you can take 

the FAA’s written, oral, and practical exams to earn your certification.

How Long Does It Take to Become a Certified Aircraft Mechanic at AIM?
